Xalapa Farm was the dream and vision
of Edward Francis Simms. It was founded in 1897 and developed into
what many call the most beautiful horse farm in Kentucky.
Edward F. Simms was born and raised in
Paris, Kentucky and educated at Yale University and at the
University of Virginia Law School. Upon graduation, young Simms went
to Texas to make a name for himself in the emerging oil industry. He
was very successful and he returned to Kentucky just after the turn
of the century to develop his passion for thoroughbreds. E.F. Simms
became the driving force behind Xalapa
Farm.
Many outstanding thoroughbreds have been bred and developed, then and
now, from Xalapa Farm. One of those horses includes ETERNAL, who went on
to win the 1918 Hopeful and the 1919 Brooklyn Handicap in the Xalapa
canary and purple colors.
Xalapa’s greatest thoroughbred accomplishments were not realized
until after the death of Edward Frances Simms. In 1920, he bought
for a record sum of $125,000 the European champion;
PRINCE PALATINE.
In his career, he won the Eclipse Stakes, Doncaster Cup, Coronation
Cup, and finally the Ascot Cup twice. Arguably, one of Prince
Palatine’s greatest successes at stud was through his daughter BLUE
GRASS. She produced a colt named UNBREAKABLE, whose most notable
offspring was Preakness winner, POLYNESIAN, sire of NATIVE DANCER.
Through Native Dancer, Prince Palatine's blood has been widely
dispersed, as Native Dancer founded a male line through RAISE A
NATIVE, his sons ALYDAR and MR. PROSPECTOR, and their descendants.
Native Dancer was also the broodmare sire of NORTHERN DANCER, widely
acclaimed as one of the most successful stallions of this century.
There is some blood of Prince Palatine coursing through the veins of
virtually every American classic winner of the last thirty years.
M ost
notable modern stakes winners include the French derby and Prix L'Arc de Triomphe winner SUAVE DANCER, Japanese millionaire
SUGINO HAYAKAZE and stakes winners BOG TROTTER,
POTEEN and STELLAR AFFAIR.
